Description
Tufa is a variety of limestone, formed by the precipitation of carbonate minerals from ambient temperature water bodies. Geothermally heated hot springs sometimes produce similar (but less porous) carbonate deposits known as travertine. Tufa is sometimes referred to as (meteogene) travertine; care must be taken when searching through literature to prevent confusion with hot spring (thermogene) travertine. Calcareous tufa should not be confused with tuff, a porous volcanic rock with parallel etymological origins that is sometimes called "tufa".
Mono Lake (/ˈmoʊnoʊ/ MOH-noh) is a large, shallow saline soda lake in Mono County, California, formed at least 760,000 years ago as a terminal lake in an endorheic basin. The lack of an outlet causes high levels of salts to accumulate in the lake. These salts also make the lake water alkaline.
This desert lake has an unusually productive ecosystem based on brine shrimp that thrive in its waters, and provides critical nesting habitat for two million annual migratory birds that feed on the shrimp and blackflies (that also feed on the shrimp).
The human history of Mono Lake is associated with its productive ecosystem. The native Kutzadika'a people derived nutrition from the pupae of the alkali flies that live in the lake. When the city of Los Angeles diverted water from the lake, it lowered the lake level, which imperiled the migratory birds.

Beautiful capture Timothy. Thank you for the detailed description....fascinating! I get a feel of mysteriousness. Would make a great book cover for a mystery book. Love the low lying clouds and their reflection. Love the blue tones. Nicely composed. l/v

Timothy, this is a wonderful landscape image. The colours are magnificent. Perhaps you could have dodged (with some digital darkroom tools) the rocks in the foreground on the left, as well as that peak in the background on the left, to highlight the effects of that remaining sunlight.

So very clear! Great focus. I really like that one side of the photo shows the evening tones and the other side shows the fading warmth of the sun. It has me feeling ready to go to the beach and watch the sun set. Nice work. L/F

This piece is stunning! I really like the contrast between dark and light as it plays from left to right on the image.
